How to Install and Use Discord Voice Chat on elementary OS
Discord is a popular voice, video, and text chat platform for gaming groups, study circles, open-source communities, and remote teams. On elementary OS, it runs well for everyday calls, although the best installation method depends on whether you prefer a traditional Debian package or a sandboxed Flatpak application.
This guide covers installation, account setup, microphone permissions, audio troubleshooting, screen sharing, notifications, and sensible privacy settings. The instructions suit current elementary OS installations, including systems used over Australian NBN connections and on laptops connected to Bluetooth headsets.
Choose the Right Discord Package
The official Discord website provides a Debian package with a .deb file. This is usually the most direct option for elementary OS because the distribution uses Debian and Ubuntu technologies underneath its Pantheon desktop. Download the package for Linux from Discord’s website, selecting the Debian-based download rather than the Windows or macOS version.
Once the download finishes, open your Files application and go to the Downloads folder. Double-click the Discord .deb file and allow elementary OS to open it with its software installer. If the graphical installer does not appear, open Terminal and move into the download folder with:
cd ~/Downloads
You can then install the package with:
sudo apt install ./discord-*.deb
The ./ tells apt to install a local file rather than search the software repositories. Enter your account password when prompted. When the process completes, open Applications and search for Discord.
A Flatpak can be a useful alternative if the Debian package produces dependency errors or you want Discord separated from more of the operating system. The Flathub version is maintained outside the elementary project, so review its permissions and publisher information before installing it. If Flatpak is already available, the command is commonly:
flatpak install flathub com.discordapp.Discord
Avoid installing both versions at the same time. Running two Discord packages can create duplicate launchers, separate caches, and confusing notification behaviour. For most new users, the .deb package is the simplest starting point, while Flatpak is convenient when package isolation matters.
Open Discord and Sign In Securely
Launch Discord from the Applications menu. The first start can take a little longer while the client creates its configuration files and checks for updates. You can sign in with an existing account by scanning the QR code from the Discord mobile app, entering your email address and password, or creating an account in a web browser.
Enable two-factor authentication if the account contains private conversations, community administration tools, or access to paid services. An authenticator application is generally safer than relying only on an SMS code. Store recovery codes somewhere secure rather than leaving them in a plain text file on your laptop.
Discord may open links in your default browser, and some login steps may use a browser window before returning to the desktop client. If the application appears stuck at the login screen, close it completely and launch it again. You can also test the web version in Firefox or another browser to determine whether the problem affects your account or the Linux application.
New users often benefit from learning where elementary OS keeps application windows, workspaces, and system controls. The Pantheon desktop guide explains those desktop conventions, which makes it easier to switch between Discord, a game, and other open applications.
Configure the Microphone and Speakers
Open Discord’s User Settings by selecting the gear icon near your account name, then choose Voice & Video. Under Input Device, select the microphone built into your laptop, a USB microphone, or the microphone on your headset. Under Output Device, choose the speakers or headphones you want to use for calls.
Use the microphone test option to confirm that your voice reaches Discord. Speak at a normal volume rather than directly into the microphone, and watch for the input indicator. If the indicator reacts constantly while you are silent, reduce input sensitivity or move the microphone away from a fan, mechanical keyboard, or laptop cooling vent.
The Input Mode setting controls how your microphone activates. Voice Activity is convenient for casual conversations, while Push to Talk prevents background noise from reaching a busy server. Push to Talk works best when its shortcut does not conflict with a game control. You can assign a key combination that is easy to reach without pressing it accidentally.
Echo cancellation, noise suppression, automatic gain control, and noise reduction can improve calls, but using every filter at once may make speech sound artificial. Start with the default settings, then change one feature at a time. A wired headset is often more reliable than Bluetooth for long conversations because Bluetooth devices can switch into a lower-quality headset profile when their microphone is active.
Grant Permissions and Fix Common Audio Problems
If Discord cannot detect your microphone, check elementary OS’s system settings as well as Discord’s own controls. Open System Settings and inspect the sound input panel. Confirm that the correct microphone is selected and that its input level is not muted or set almost to zero. USB devices may need to be unplugged and reconnected before they appear.
Flatpak installations can also require permission to access audio devices and other desktop services. You can inspect permissions with:
flatpak info --show-permissions com.discordapp.Discord
If the Flatpak version behaves differently from the Debian package, do not immediately change several settings at once. Test the microphone in another application, such as the browser’s audio recorder or a simple video-call service. This identifies whether the fault is Discord, the sound server, the headset, or the hardware itself.
A Discord restart can be necessary after changing a headset, especially when the device was connected after the application launched. On some elementary OS systems, logging out and back in refreshes the audio session. If sound is routed to the wrong device, temporarily disable other outputs, such as a monitor connected through HDMI, and select the intended headphones again.
Network conditions also affect voice quality. Australian users on a congested Wi-Fi connection may hear robotic audio even when web pages load normally. Test Discord near the NBN router, use the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band where practical, or connect through Ethernet. If friends in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, or Perth hear regular dropouts, compare the result with another server and another network before changing advanced settings.
Join Voice Channels and Manage Calls
To enter a voice chat, open a server and select a channel marked with a speaker icon. Discord connects automatically, and your account appears below the channel name. Click the microphone icon to mute yourself or the headphones icon to deafen incoming audio. Selecting the phone icon disconnects you from the channel.
Use the server’s rules and channel descriptions before speaking. Many Australian gaming and hobby communities have separate rooms for casual conversation, organised matches, study sessions, and private team discussions. A quiet channel may indicate that members expect text communication or that the group is operating in a different time zone.
Discord servers can use roles to control who may speak, share screens, invite others, or create events. If you cannot talk in a channel, the restriction may be intentional rather than a Linux problem. Contact a moderator through the appropriate text channel instead of repeatedly reconnecting.
For a private conversation, select a direct message or group message and start a voice call from there. Calls can remain active while you move to another workspace in elementary OS. Keep Discord visible in the dock or use its keyboard shortcuts if you need to mute quickly while answering a phone call or speaking to someone in the room.
You can choose a voice region for some channels when server permissions allow it. Automatic selection is generally suitable, but an Australian server region may reduce delay for people located around the country. The best result still depends on each participant’s internet provider, Wi-Fi conditions, and physical distance from the service.
Use Video, Screen Sharing, and Notifications
Discord’s video controls appear in a voice call or supported server channel. Before enabling your camera, open Voice & Video and select the correct device. A laptop camera may be listed under a generic name, while an external webcam may appear only after it is connected before Discord starts.
Screen sharing is useful for demonstrating an elementary OS setting, watching a game, or helping someone solve a software problem. Select the screen-share button and choose an application window or the entire display. Sharing a single window reduces accidental exposure of private messages, browser tabs, and documents.
Linux screen sharing can vary according to the display server and Discord’s packaging method. If a window is missing from the selection list, try sharing the entire screen, restarting Discord after opening the application you want to show, or testing the browser version. Screen-share audio may also be limited, particularly when sharing a desktop application rather than a browser tab.
Notifications can be adjusted in Discord’s User Settings and in elementary OS’s notification controls. Disable sounds for busy servers, mute channels that generate frequent updates, and set a time window for quiet notifications when you sleep. This is practical for households where a desktop alert might wake someone during an early morning shift or disturb a shared room.
Keep the application updated, but remember that a Discord update may briefly change microphone behaviour or interface layout. With a .deb installation, updates are normally handled through Discord’s own update process or a newer package. Flatpak updates can be checked with:
flatpak update
Protect Your Account and Personal Information
Discord communities vary widely in size and moderation quality. Use a distinct password, enable two-factor authentication, and be cautious with direct messages from unknown accounts. Do not share authentication codes, backup codes, payment details, or private documents through a server merely because someone appears to be a moderator.
Review Privacy & Safety settings before joining large communities. You can limit direct messages from server members, control friend requests, and decide whether Discord may use certain activity data. These controls do not make a public server private, so assume that messages, voice participation, usernames, and shared files may be visible to other members.
Australian users should also remember that online services operate under their own terms as well as relevant Australian privacy and online-safety obligations. The Privacy Act 1988 and the Online Safety Act 2021 provide important regulatory frameworks, but they are not substitutes for careful account settings or good moderation. Avoid posting another person’s personal information, recording a call without considering consent, or treating a community server as a secure workplace archive.
Parents and carers should pay attention to age limits, server invitations, and private messaging. Discord requires users to meet its minimum age requirement, which is generally 13 but can be higher in some countries or circumstances. Community rules may impose stricter limits. Reporting, blocking, and leaving a server are available when conversations become abusive or unsafe.
When Discord works correctly, elementary OS provides a clean environment for voice calls, community support, and group gaming without requiring a complicated setup. Install one package format, select the right audio devices, test the microphone, and adjust privacy and notification controls before joining busy servers.
Begin with a short private call to a trusted contact, confirm that your microphone and headphones work, and then join the community voice channel you intend to use.
